It’s been two years since NBC hit acapella singing competition The Sing-Off was on the air, but the show is gearing up for a Season 4 — with new coach Jewel! Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with host Nick Lachey at the New York City launch of Wendy’s #PretzelLoveSongs campaign in honor of the new Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger, where he talked about the show’s future and the importance of singing competitions today.
Wetpaint Entertainment: When does production begin for The Sing-Off?
Nick Lachey: We’ll start taping here next month so it’s creeping up on us in terms of production, but it won’t air till the end of the year. But I’m very excited to have the show coming back and very excited to have Jewel with us. I think she’s great and certainly very talented.
What’s Jewel like on The Sing-Off?
She’s an incredible singer-songwriter. The few times I’ve had a chance to work with her, she’s been a complete sweetheart, so I think she’ll be great to work with. But I think she brings a real expertise to the show. I don’t know how much acapella experience she has, but music is definitely her thing. I think she’ll be a great addition.
Does you watch other singing competitions?
I have watched The Voice. I don’t watch any of them religiously but I’ve seen them all at some point, yeah. You have to see what the other shows are doing and figure out how you fit into that whole big picture.
Do you think it’s an issue that none of the shows have spawned a real hit single?
I do. It makes me really excited that the Pentatonix, who was our last winner of The Sing-Off, is doing so well and is out there touring and getting critical acclaim. It’s important that the shows — getting validated by the artists we discover. It’s an important part of it.
